How to work from home and make the end of your day feel like the end of your day?

We’ve all got to eat, and that’s the best time to treat yo’ self! Whether you love spending time in the kitchen cooking up a storm, or you’re more of a Deliveroo kinda girl – it doesn’t matter. Find a recipe/takeout where your mouth waters at the sheer thought of the meal and go ahead and make/order it! And if that also includes a cheeky glass of wine to accompany the meal, that’s fine too.

With lockdown 2.0 looming over us, it’s never been more vital to get our work/life balance on point. When lockdown first hit way back in March, we all fell victim to working longer hours. There was nothing else to do, so we all ended up being attached to our work laptops and mobiles, unable to fully switch off in the evening since our WFH set up in the living room/kitchen/bedroom was staring us down. Long gone are our commutes and our ability to finish the working day at a suitable time. From trial and error, we’ve come up with some helpful top tips to help you get that balance back in your life and start relaxing in the evenings yet again!

Go offline and unplug

When the clock strikes 5:30 pm, turn. It. Off. We all do it. We say we'll switch off as soon as we’ve answered all our emails, or that we'll press shut down in the next 5 minutes. Nothing is so important it can’t wait for tomorrow. Remember those 5 minutes add up - suddenly it’s 10:30 pm, and you’re still sitting at your computer. If you can, try moving your work laptop/phone so that it’s not even in the same room as you. Out of sight, out of mind will never feel more relevant than right now!

Take a breath of fresh air

Yes, we are talking about venturing outside after work. We know this is less than ideal now that we’re heading into Autumn/Winter, but we promise you, it will help clear your head! So dig out your fav Zara winter coat from the back of your wardrobe, wrap up and just start walking.

Move your feet

OK, so this one may seem similar to our point above, but we know not everyone will want to venture out when it’s cold/wet/miserable outside. So whether you’re willing to go out or plan to stay in, it’s time to be active! When lockdown first hit, the number of fitness challenges that were flying around was a bit ridiculous – whether that’s Chloe Tings 2 Week Shred, 30 Days of Yoga with Adriene, or Kayla Itsines’ 28 Day Home Workout, we seemed to be spoilt for choice. But even if you don’t want to take part in a set challenge, still get moving. My fav is to play Good As Hell by Lizzo on full volume (sorry neighbours) and have a little dance. It's so good for both your body and mind!

Bra off, make-up off, comfy PJs on

This used to be a ritual when we returned home after our commute. Somehow this part of our routine has got lost along the way since we started working from home. It’s time to bring it back! Don’t be sitting at home in your workwear. End your day how it’s supposed to end - tucked up on the sofa, under a blanket, in fluffy PJs with a facemask on (facemask is optional). Now, how good does that sound?!

Food, glorious food

We’ve all got to eat, and that’s the best time to treat yo’ self! Whether you love spending time in the kitchen cooking up a storm, or you’re more of a Deliveroo kinda girl – it doesn’t matter. Find a recipe/takeout where your mouth waters at the sheer thought of the meal and go ahead and make/order it! And if that also includes a cheeky glass of wine to accompany the meal, that’s fine too.

An hour a day keeps your boredom at bay

Set time aside to do that thing you’ve been meaning to do for some time. Been dying to read Be Your Own Best Friend by Chessie King? This is your time! Haven’t quite understood the hype around Below Deck? Now’s the chance! Make yourself a little to-do list of the things you’ve been meaning to do and set time aside to do it every evening.

From practising all these points above, I’ve found myself actually enjoying my evenings again and being able to switch off fully. Just because the opportunity to work is there doesn’t mean you have to take up the offer. It’s time to look after yourself, practice self-love, and move away from your WFH set up and enjoy your evenings once more!
