Why Does Change Require So Much Effort?


We do what we do most of the time because it’s easier. And we’re not alone. Water flows downstream, taking the least path of resistance. It goes around the rocks, not through them.

Sometimes, the best choice is to take the path of least resistance. But not always. At times, to do what needs to be done, we’re going to have to dynamite through that granite and barrel straight through.  

It’s fun, it’s easy, it’s important to talk about what we want but then, at some point, if we want to live the life we dream of, we’re going to have to stand up and get moving. There comes a point where words need to stop and action needs to begin.

In short. We are going to have to DO something.

Whaaat? Are you crazy? Get up off this couch?! Turn off the best show ever on NetFlix?! I don’t think so.

So why does change require so much dang effort? It has a lot to do with our hardwiring and the laws of physics—mainly the concept of inertia.  A body at rest stays at rest. Newton’s First Law of Motion clearly explains our inexplicable love of love of yoga pants and Netflix. The same laws that govern the path of planets and the projection of stars is basically telling us to sit on the couch and watching one episode and then another and another. It’s the natural state of things to do nothing. So, we can’t help it?

Kind of, sort but not really because Newton’s First Law of Motion has a chaser. It goes on to say also that a body in in motion stays in motion, moving at a constant speed in a straight line unless acted up by external force.  In other words, if you get going and move past the ugly business of the first step--pulling yourself out of bed at 5:30am to head to the gym or clearing the junk from your desk so you can start your proposal—the rest is gonna be a whole lot easier.
